[NTLK] Wifi drivers

The wifi driver is available on UNNA.org: <http://www.unna.org/view.php?/drivers/ethernet/WiFi>. The source zip file includes a compiled driver. You will also need the Newton Internet Enabler packages installed to get everything to work:< http://www.unna.org/view.php?/apple/software/Internet/NIE2>. Check out Tony Kan’s instructions for getting everything setup: <http://myapplenewton.blogspot.com/2008/08/going-wireless-setting-up-wifi.html>.

If you don’t have a WaveLAN card you may need the lantern DDK and/or MoreWiFiCards driver package. Don’t install these if you have a WaveLAN card because they will make itstop working.
<http://www.unna.org/view.php?/apple/development/DDKs> (I think the full one. Been so long since I tried a non WaveLAN card)

<rant> How about THIS? You have the courtesy to post, right after your message in your native or familiar language, a translation in, say, English, as others have done. This allows the rest who don't understand your language, to also enjoy it.

Posting a message that most of the rest of us cannot read without such a translation is UNBELIEVABLY rude. The capper is your line of apology. SKIP THAT, and post the translation instead.

If your English is not good enough or you don't comprehend it well enough for that, then you know how the rest of us feel. Perhaps you should consider that first, or use Google Translation.

Yes, I could also use that app... but quite frankly your rudeness has caused me to completely lose interest in your message.

Any native language is welcome here...but please don't be insensitive and fail to include a suitable translation so we all can enjoy your thoughts.

</rant>

Thanks,
Forrest

Wow! This looks fantastic!

> Basically there?s an ATTiny85 processor that watches the signal from the GPIO line and sends commands to the clock generator when a clock switch is requested.  I read in the SA1100 docs that you?re supposed to use 1v peak-to-peak signal when clocking the processor from an external clock generator.  I tried this and it didn?t seem to work, so I?m doing the same thing that the original implant did, and just use a 3.3v signal. (Not sure if this is a good or bad idea)

I think that this is fine. Great idea, great execution!

FWIW, while almost all of the conversation here uses English, I personally don?t mind if non-English speakers post here too.

Adding an English translation is great, but as Forest mentions, automated translation is available if I don?t understand the language in use.

That way, while I might not understand the conversation, I at least know it?s going on and can get the gist of it (via automatic translation) if I choose.  If non-English conversation is carried out on different lists, I don?t even know it?s happening.  Given the size of our community, I think such fragmentation is undesirable.  For example, Japanese Newton users were historically quite isolated ? to our overall detriment, I think.

My 5c (1c and 2c no longer physical currency units here),

Yeah, according to those same docs, there are static protection clamping diodes on the clock input, so I think the diodes will protect even if the clock signal is a little hot? but they say it introduces noise/error.  I?m not particularly worried about it.  Eventually I want to do a burn in test and run it for a while and see how it behaves.

I also wrote a new routine to estimate the MHz of the processor.  Basically it compares the RTC to the processor ticks.  The original Implant had an app written in NSBasic to do this, but since it was NSBasic, it took a long time to synchronize the clock (the RTC only has 1-second resolution). With C code you can do this quicker by watching the RTC register directly.

Yes I'm trying to decide whether I should splurge for a bluetooth PICO card
and follow the process here:
https://systemfolder.wordpress.com/2010/03/29/newton-bluetooth-connection/
to connect to my mac for internet, since I no longer have a 802.11 WEP
network in my house. However, connecting to my Mac to share internet is not
really ideal because it would limit my movement a lot, so I was hoping
someone had tried to pair their newton to their phone and use the internet
(my iPhone has bluetooth internet sharing, for example), but I think that
this is pretty undocumented so it is probably impossible. It would be
really handy on the go, though, if it did work.

If I can find an inexpensive bluetooth card I will give it a go.

There are a bunch of PICO cards available from Germany, many of them are
selling for over 30 euros, which I thought was expensive until I saw this
one for sale!

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Partita-1000-x-Pico-Card-Bluetooth-scheda-PCMCIA-per-la-antichi-Notebook-/192132319840?hash=item2cbbfa8a60:g:EZAAAOSwxH1T3qmj

Now the others seem cheap by comparison.

It is not possible to connect Newton to iPhone.

The best way is WiFi. Even if you connect successfully your Newton via BT, then you will get very unstable connection.
