[NTLK] H1000 battery and charger issue

I have an H1000 that I lost the charger for six months ago. I replaced it
with a modern charger, which allowed the Newton to work for about thirty
minutes before I believe frying the battery. Later I found out that using a
replacement charger would do exactly what it did. Bad on my part. Is the
larger battery replaceable with a modern one, and if it is will it work with
my current charger?
