[NTLK] Memory card and -10557 error

While I could be mistaken (I am not certain of the number and I can't find the reference at the moment), I think that means the "info" area of the flash card is damaged. That area specifies what type of card it is (linear, flash, size, etc) and without it in proper working order the Newton just says "Huh?"

If you have a high end flash equipment you can reprogram that area, but not the average user. Some devices don't depend on that area and can use the card anyway. Some laptops for example. There was a discussion about this years ago on the list with David Humphreys (creator of the Ser-001 board).

Try opening prefs and then insert the card and erase that way. If that don't work, I think the card is damaged as I said. If I recall correctly, we got onto the discussion with David talking about cards that were damaged due to hitting the hardware reset button on the Newt while the cards were inserted. At least that was the suspicion.
