Hi Craig,
> Is ata the way to go for reliable storage (because I could use new cards & higher capacity within reason) or is there a cheap way to get old 8 or 20mb cards that have plenty of r/w life left?
In general it is better to buy linear card working with Newton without any extra software, however you can use ATA cards with ATA driver. I’ve prepared some info on my webpage. Maybe you will find some useful information about cards working with Newton: http://applenewton.co.uk/newton-workshop/memory-card-types/
> If it’s ata, does it matter which pcmcia cf or sd adapter, is anyone running a particular brand that they know works with a 2100? I’d think smaller capacity cf cards would be easier to find than sd, or are they all old stock now which may not be reliable?
From my experience it is pointless to use bigger card than 32MB. Newton will slow down and sometimes just freeze with bigger cards. Not all CF adapters will work perfectly with ATA driver. I have a few of them working fine with CF cards formated before (on different CF adapter), but if I want format the card by using this particular CF adapter, I simply can’t. I don’t know why, but it is like that.
> Finally any pointers to buy the screen cover and hinge section for a 2100 that I could buy, also a couple of the pcmcia blanks for when cards aren’t inserted.

It is good to read it :)
