Sounds like you might be very happy with eProbe, both hard and software
(AFAIK) that was made especially for the eMate touting school kids,
Very hard to come by these days though, and not cheap.

This is the website of the people who originally made the eProbe, it's not
listed anymore though, and seem to remember that somebody on this list
mailed them once only to be told that they don't carry or make them anymore.
