I just installed NCU on my computer at work, and went to connect Newt to do a new, complete and totally fresh back-up of all my data, and when I turned it on, I immediately got the message 'Newton does not have enough free memory right now to do what you asked. Restarting Newton may fix the problem.' Nothing is open, no apps are running in the background or any such nonsense; it's just as soon as it powers on, that message pops up. I used Atomic Heap Cleaner to check, and I'm down to only 1924 bytes free, from over 80,000 earlier when I was reading mail and cleaning my in- and out-boxes.

The 'frame' remained (the menu bar at the top, the buttons for in-box and out-box, etc.), just the messages would vanish. I would fip back over to the in-box, and everything there was fine. Flip back to the out-box, messages there, scroll up, <poof!>. Nada.

A website I found yesterday while searching for a new copy of NCU (mine is in storage - dumb move, I know) said that the -1 error during a backup was likely due to a corruption in a data entry somewhere. Why do I suspect that the corruption is in the In/Out-box, it's eating memory like a dog eats biscuits, and I'm going to have a devil of a time fixing it on my own?

If you don't have anything really important in your In/Out, you could open "Extras", switch to "Storage" and try to delete the "In/Out Items" storage.
