NTLK Heap Management

Hi Michael,

Installing packages onto your Newton will, of course, move the package to
the Newton and occupy the flash storage necessary to store the program.
However, installation will also put a "handle" for the program into the User
Heap, effectively using up the available heap. Add to this the concept of
instantiation vs execution heap requirements, and too many packages
installed renders the Newton useless. This is why Apple recommended cards
of 4MB or less.

"Freezing" is a process where the package still resides on the Newton, and
it's data is still available, but the "handle" in heap memory is removed.
"Unfreezing" a package is the process of establishing the handle again in
heap so the package can be executed.

There are various utilities available to freeze/unfreeze groups of packages
with a single gesture (NewtCase 3.1 by Dan Rowley is the one I use), which
makes management of the heap resource much easier. I have 2 32MB cards
crammed full of stuff, and can store and execute anything I want in any
order.

I hope this helps...

Regards,

Gary

I recently purchased a Pretec 32MB card and have NEVER been able to use more
than half of the space on it. The Newton freezes after loading ANY package
at a certain point and no matter what I do it freezes initializing the last
package after rebooting. Once I remove ANY package it will init. all pkgs
fine. Is it possible the internal memory needs a certain amount of space to
init. each package? I'm totally at a loss here. I've backed-up and restored
sooooooo many times and the same result EVERY time. Thanks for any replies.
