No, they don't need to be Mac formatted; a Newton isn't a Mac.

Try opening the Prefs app and then putting in the card; that might do the
trick, but probably not. Generally, if you put the cards in and they
aren't recognized, they aren't going to work. Newtons only work with
LINEAR Flash memory. Those are probably ATA.

They may even be cards that have been used in Cisco routers; such cards
are basically "used up" rather quickly (flash RAM cards can only be
written a certain number of times; it's a VERY large number, but Cisco
routers evidently write to them continuously and use 'em up quickly).

I would return them if you can.
