Do you (still) have the AAA Alkaline battery cage that came with your
Newton? If not, NewtonOz may have them. Or perhaps Apple Fulfillment or
Sun Remarketing or suchlike places.

If so, you should be able to then use rechargeables, although I don't
know how well the battery life and battery low warnings are going to
work. You'll have to rig something to press the switch in the Newton
that get pressed by the rechargeable pack's case in order to charge them
in your Newton though.
