I'm in this situation too. I looked closer on the top lid and found that
it could easily be machined out from e.g. aluminium. A thin plate of 4
mm thickness and a milling machine are needed. The form is simple and
could be simplified too. The lid could be made from two parts: the
complicated thicker piece with the hinge holes and a thinner piece for
the LCD.
Anyone interested in a metal replacement?
