I don't know of a standalone GSM card which has its own supply (I'm in a
country where the GSM "standard" doesn't follow the rest of the world).
However, I can think of one way that you could use one of these with a
Newton *without* the associated rapid power drain: obtain a KISS solar panel.

The nice thing about this is that the panel will keep the Newton charged
while you chat away. The downside is that you'll probably look pretty
stupid walking around with the solar panel deployed.
