Sorry to get in between the Peter vs. gopi ;-) but I think this isn't true
either, Apple's R&D on the Newton was done, paid for, the reason it got
axed is that Steve Jobs didn't like to keep the pet project from the guy
that kicked him out in the first place.
As we all know the Newton could have made it quite easily with good
marketing (as Apple's seems to understand nowadays) because I agree with
gopi, nothing really innovative from them at the moment (I'm a Mac user BTW)
However if they turn up with a really good finder in OS X I might revise
this opinion a little, mind you, just a little, since they would have done
something nobody managed so far, still nothing revolutionary.
But than I think SJ is just as afraid of that word as the democrats are of
being called liberal.
To make this long story short, Newton Inc. would have made sense with a lot
of very shrewd marketing (probably with changing their name and that of the
PDA involved, it was much too tainted in the computer industry)
BTW just to give SJ some credit, the first thing that Newton Inc. did was
design a new logo and a terrible one too, so maybe those guys had their
priorities all screwed up.
