NTLK Off-Topic: reason for the X-Face mail header?

OK, SimpleMail 4.1.1 appears to be working well and I can filter stuff
without too much of a problem (no leaks). I noticed that Simon included
support for the X-Face message header via the facedecoder.pkg extension.

My question is: what is the point of this header anyway?

I know that it allows certain mailers (mostly Unix and Linux-based) to
personalize outbound messages but what is the point of sending out the
little image?
