Doing more digging I found this Apple Masters page:

http://www.apple.com/applemasters/cbonington/

where Bonington writes: "I took my PowerBook to Tibet to transmit stories
and pictures of our attempt on Sepu Kangri." Liar! :)

I found a press release from 1996 here:

http://www.harvard.co.uk/pressrel/agfa/agf6.htm

that says "The pictures will be transmitted across the world via an Apple
Newton computer, programmed especially for this task by Logica, the leading
software development company, and through a satellite telephone."

Gold:! I found the old Sepu Kangri web site on bonington.com:

http://www.bonington.com/sepuweb/

They used a Newton 130 with an Agfa camera as well as an Olympus Camedia
C-800L with a Powerbook 3400. Two seperate systems.
