[NTLK] Pet Peeves, Upscale Image, Ads

Ahhhhhh....
I finally managed to get as up-to-date as possible with NTLK after reading
digests 292-297. Boy does this list produce a lot messages!!! Guess it
makes sense on a community list.
Anyway...
Thanks for the answers to my pet peeves. I'll probably use some of these
third-party software solutions and hopefully I'll be able to buy an uMP2k
at some point. But my point was just to rant about the things I like less
in the design of our beloved.

Now, the upscale image thing. There's something to be said about Apple's
image as a company making "upscale" products, especially with regards to
the Newton. The very first time I read the expression "vertical market" was
in a newspaper article describing the Newton and other PDAs. This was a few
weeks before the OMP was launched. I still don't know what "vertical
market" means exactly, but I remember the effect of this article on me. The
Newton OMP oozed upscaleness. That's why I wanted one and that's why I got
one as soon as I could. In fact, this whole upscale thing might be one of
the reasons members of the NTLK community are so interesting.

Which relates to subtle advertising. Quality products should theoretically
demand little agressive advertising. In fact, agressive ads for some
products usually trigger more negative reactions from me than subtle ads.
This might in fact have to do with the differences in marketing strategies
between US and the rest of the world. In a way, Newtons are "distinguished"
and agressive marketing would have taken this luster off, IMVHO.

Take care!
