I vaguely recall someone saying that they removed all the keys then placed a
piece of thin foam (with holes punched holes in it for the keys) onto the
keyboard and then replaced all the keys. The foam then provided a cushion
to reduce the noise but did make the keys a bit harder to press. Anyone
else remember something like this?

i gave that a shot on a few of the keys, but threw in the towel because
you really have to wail on the keys to get them to register. Going
THWACK! THWACK! to type is admittably more fun, but still noisy.
