Yes, definitely.
You see, you can have two fundamental kinds of serial cables: direct,
and null-modem. The direct cable connects trasmit line at one end to
trasmit line at the other end, same for receive. A null-modem cable
swaps them: trasmit goes to receive. Now, if you want to connect two
computers via their serial ports, you should connect one's trasmit
line to the other's receive line, and vice versa. You can do this with
ONE null-modem cable, or an odd number thereof. A gender changer is a
direct cable: it doesn't swap. So you are using TWO null-modem cables,
that sum up to a direct cable. What I did to initially connect my
Nokia 7110 to my MP2100 was to put a third null-modem cable between
the two, and it worked. Now I use a d-sub 9 to mini-din 8 direct cable
