My original Apple pop-out stylus on my Newton 130 does this exact same
thing, with the kind of greasy-looking scratches that wipe away. I'm
not sure exactly why, but I do know that after lots and lots of use, my
130's screen is still absolutely perfect.

Not sure what you mean, sounds like there might be some kind of residue
on
your screen.
