Trust me, I've tried to get around it. A router with MAC address cloning
seems to be the only thing that has a chance.
If Telus (My DSL provider here in Calgary, Alberta) doesn't have your
MAC address on file then it will give you an IP that is a 10.x.x.x type
address. This only allows you to go to the network card registration
site. Once you register (either manually or the site auto-detects your
hardware address) then you have a normal IP that lets you surf. Of
course, the auto-detect doesn't work on the Newton so I needed to find
out the address so I could manually register it using my G4.
By the way, my DSL isn't PPPoE or anything. There's no connection
software. It's simple DHCP with the added hassle of the network needing
the system's MAC address.
Annoying? Oh Yes.
Get around it? Not without spending money on a router (which I'll do
eventually)
