To make it clear:
the little button on the bottom of the battery compartment is used to
distinguish between rechargeable and NOT rechargeable batteries.
The original battery pack will press teh button down while inserted,
indicating for the Newton that it can be recharged.

To operate the Newt you do not need this button at all.
If you want to charge the batteries inside the Newt (using the ac adaptor)
you have to make sure that this button is pressed down.

There have been a lot of threads commenting that you can charge NiMh cells
iunside the newt as well.
Maybe not that effectively and you will notice that the power bar indication
is not really equivalent to the battery capacity, but it works.
