since you have the good fortune to be using an older mac setup, just use
AppleTalk. set DOck to appletalk, input the name of the 5300c, and try it
that way. i loved doing backups and installs from my old Duo2300 w/OS 8.6,
much better than mucking about in windoze [or osx].

Modem/Printer is the Serial port, so you have it plugged in to the right
place. Make sure Newton Connection and the Newton are set to connect
over serial... that's about all I can think of. If it still isn't
