Just about any PC card modem will work. Drivers are easily available for
Hayes and 3Com 28.8 and 33.6 modems (both use X-Jack so you don't have to
worry about special cables. Motorola Power and Cellect series modems also
work well but have proprietary cables that can be a pain. Don't get one of
the "combo" cards that also includes ethernet. You might be able to get the
modem to work with the eMate ... but more likely you can't.

For email, I use SimpleMail on both my eMate and MP2100. Eudora and
EnRoute are other possibilities, but SimpleMail is the only one that's still
supported.

PC card?
Yes. Farallon, 3Com Etherlink III and D-Link 660 ethernet cards work
well (with the appropriate drivers). I use a Farallon Etherwave card (still
pretty expensive unless you can find one used). I have a D-Link 660+ as a
backup (about $25 CDN new). Both the Farallon and Etherlink III cards use
the same 3Com dongle (the Farallon was made by 3Com but they can't use the
same drivers).

As for web browsing ... don't bother. The eMate is really too slow. It
can be done but you'll find it painful and frustrating.
