The battery hardware experts will probably chime in but I remember them
saying in the past that it wasn't a good idea.
Seems to make sense if you take into consideration that one has to charge
NiMH batteries in a special charger...
When the 1x0 series was made NiMH wasn't widely available yet.
And the fact that it does work for years doesn't necessarily prove anything,
wouldn't help me if it would kill my Newt.
