Sorry, you cannot compare the Newt serial connection (RS-485) with USB.
USB is designed for hot plugging while RS-485 is NOT.
Thus, under unlucky circimstances the RS-485 interface may latch up while
the USB interface is expected NOT to do so.
Ok, this is THEORY: practice shows that USB can be damaged due to hot
plugging and RS-485 will normally survive hot plugging in most cases...
Nevertheless you should be aware, that RS-485 is not designed to be hot
plugged and may be damaged, especially if it comes to the discharge of
electrostatic energy.
But as long as you try to touch the isolated parts only it should be ok.
