Slowdown.exe isn't a surefire cure for NCU -1 Errors on Windows.
Sometimes there is "corrupt" data in the Newt that causes NCU to choke.
The error message is the same: communication error -1. NCU has a fairly
broad view of what is "corrupt" data. I've heard speculations (though
nothing conclusive) that -1s can be triggered by notepad extensions
such as Super Notepad, by creating notes that are "too long" (whatever
that means), or by creating a note with overlapping text fields.

I personally haven't been able to do an NCU Backup or Export operation
for several years on either Mac or Windows NCU. I use NBX on the Mac
for backups and X-Port on Mac and Windows for getting notes into/out of
the Newton.
