Are you logged in as 'root' or as yourself ?

I think the first user created after initial boot and working through the
setup
wizard is a normal user with admin rights (I think the Win XP wizard does
something
similar - thereby hiding the fact that an 'administrator' user exists)

I think even as yourself with admin rights certain parts of the system are
protected
from you.

When installing things I suspect gui installer packages are wrappers for
sudo to
give you 'psuedo' root access.

You can mess about with the local NetInfo database to enable root Gui
login
which I suspect will let you do nasty things to the system via the Gui
interface
that being a normal user with admin rights wouldn't normally let you do.
