There is also - I think more compellingly - a
_marketing argument.

Newtons are not per se particularly profitable. But
newton accessories are _very profitable. This is why
we still can get write writes, styli, and even cables.

A dongle means at least one more part to sell (the
dongle) and then any and sundry cables, gender
changers, null modem adaptors...

I am actually suprised if apple no longer manufactures
or sells connectivity cables, power cables, batteries
for the newton. Those were the profitable items.
