If you read some of the discussion in the media over the recent "agreement"
(read monopolistic collusion) between the RIAA and various representatives
of the computer industry, it is pointed out in some articles that, in fact,
books are somewhat of a special case as regards 'making backup copies'.
That is, you can't. Stupid, I know, especially since, if you buy LOTR in
books-on-tape form you CAN make backups of those.
