Shell access is the basic account for accessing a Unix server, either using
dial-up or (secure) SSH over TCP/IP. Think of it as using your modem to get
the Unix equivalent of a DOS Prompt, only remotely. Once you're logged in,
terminal emulation provides a text based view of what's happening on that
server. All the processes, including those that provide internet access,
are running on the server and NOT on your Newton.

The advantage is for older Newtons. The Newton OMP/100/110/120's all have
dial-up capabilities but ethernet, PPP and other modern internet protocols
won't work very well (if at all).

Not enough memory, speed, nor Driver/Protocol support have put these
perfectly good computers on the road to obsolescence.

Using shell access and terminal emulation on your Newton would,
technically, allow you to surf the web (in text of course), send & receive
email (using GoFetch Shell Transport), save files to the server for
unlimited storage or backup space for your Newton, play text based games,
plus a lots of other modern internet things.

You now have a 10 year old Newton that can (still) do more than most brand
new PDA's or WindowsCE devices.
