I've even had those kind messages on my eMate -- I forget the exact wording,
but it was definitely to the effect that "this battery is defective" -- and
even then, the plug/unplug routine brought it back to normal behaviour.

As I mentioned, it only happens when the battery has become deeply
discharged by sitting around unplugged for many weeks. But it seems to me
that would resemble the state of brand new battery that's never been
charged, so I think the same technique is worth trying in Jim's situation.

In my experience it never charges while it says "waiting", no matter how
long you leave it like that.
