I tend to agree with your goal ;-)

The site seems to be off-line at this very moment but
www.rselectronics.com/ carries EL Sheets (EL=Electroluminescent)
You can also find them at http://www.beingseen.com/index.html and you
can see their colors straight from the home-page (and yes, they also
have white)
I've seen a Newt with a white backlight and though I liked it I wasn't
so taken by it that I would change it for my green one, waiting until
the green one finally fades...
