This sounds like exactly the behaviour my Newton has. But it's quite
intentiional. I have a package installed which allows me to specify
which hours of the day/night the backlight should be automatically
turned on when I switch on my Newt. This package is called "Options".
Sorry I'm not quite sure where on UNNA I got it from, but there seem to
be several variations on this kind of package. Perhaps your Newt has one
of these installed?
