This error code is some sort of a driver exception. In order to use the 3Com
card(Iuse 3C589D) you need the following installed:

3C589
Farallon Enet
Newton Devices(Part of NIE)
z3ComDrv:clli

Make sure that the entire NIE package set is installed. Also, be sure that
"AppleTalk" is selected in the NCU(Mac) preferences. On the Mac, set your
AppleTalk control preference to 'Built-in Ethernet'(perhaps just
'Ethernet'?)

On Newt:

In AppleTalk prefs, select 'EtherTalk' and '3Com 3c589D card'.

In Dock: Select AppleTalk, then in the pull-down menu, select 'other
computer' in order to look for a connection.

The rest should be pretty intuitive for a Mac user...
