[NTLK] WEP keys and airport and card (oh my)

Due to an upcoming visit from my ISP, I am using a 40bit WEP key to
secure my wireless network (for now).

My base station router is an iMac running 10.3.6 using the built in
resharing of internet via the airport card.

This works great for my PBg4 which is also running OSX and has a built
in airport card, as I can use the same text WEP key...

For example:

Lets say my WEP key is "tony1"

Now, interestingly, I have a PBG3 (wallstreet) that I use the open
source wireless driver with. This works great also without WEP, and
has a built in mode to accept Airport style WEP keys and translate them
too. I found out though that this will not work with my very old
Wavelan Gold card!

It just so happens that I have a newer Wavelan Silver card that came
out of an Airport base station, and the exact same setup works on the
PBG3!

So for one thing, there is clearly an issue with the firmware revision
of these cards and WEP compatibility.

Now for the Newton part....

I have tried the Newton with both of the cards and several variants of
the WEP strings/keys and it isn't working. I am using a manual setup
so this isn't a DHCP issue.

Any suggestions on the best way to get all of these drivers on the same
page with regards to keys? I guess I could just switch to a hex key
using $ on the imac, but I like the memorability of a string.

Thanks in advance for ideas/suggestions,
Marty

PS I will be flashing these lucent cards soon... So they all work.
