As far as I know the whining noise encountered when using the backlight of
your Newton is caused by an internal transformer of some sort. This
tranformer is required to pump up the voltage required by the backlight...

Compare it to the whining noise you sometimes encounter with your PC. The
first batch of G5 Powermac's were notorious for this.
