>thanks for the info about "other information"! I found an old backup May
2003 copied it into Backups folder then dock with Newton MP2100 set to
serial & NCU set to 38,400 and slowdown Speed set to second to last hash
mark & Reaction set to the second hash mark. Connected from Newton side &
got connected! this part always works! Then chose backup from Newton side &
got the check list & then unchecked other information & checked all the
rest! Internal memory was 1644k used & 1879k free with 32 Mb flash memory
having 24680k used & 6670k free. After about 1 hour it completed without
disconnecting! checked backup & it said that my internal memory was 576k
(589,824 bytes) & that my flash
>card had 22Mb (23,166,976 bytes) backed up! So is it correct to assume (oh
oh) that "other information" was the problem? I really would like to find
out if the "other information" takes up the memory that wasn't detected on
my new backup? Also I couldn't use SBM because it expired! Any other
suggestions to fix "other information"? Thanks for all the help! I'm using
Win98se on a Dell Latitude Ls @ 400mz!

Well that is a incrmental backup and some have had problems with that when
trying to restore. So you definitly want to try to get a full backup. And
you are right, there does seem to be something in one of the soups that are
listed as "other information" that is getting NCU out of timing sync.

To fix it you have to track down which soups are listed as "other
information". About the best way is to take a good look at your list when
you are about to start the incramental backup as to what soups are listed.
Then go into your extras drawer and look under storage to find out what
soups are listed there but not in your backup. Just be aware that some
soups may be goruped together under one time in the backup. For instance if
you use Notion, each database will be listed in the extras drawer seperately
but in the backup it is just listed as one item called "Notion".

Once you have a list of possible soups then you can use a soup editor to dig
around in them to find what the bad entry is. Also find that the soups in
"other information" is not something you care about. Just delete the data
in that soup and that will solve your problem for sure. And if it is all
data you can't be without, try moving that soup to another card (soup
mover), then don't have that card inserted when you backup.

On a final note, I would have tried backing up with slowdown on its max
settings. With 400mhz you don't need more than one instance, but definitly
both settings at their max. I have backedup with a similar speed system and
anything higher caused that -1 (communication error).

Oh one other thing to do, turn down your FIFO buffers
(start-settings-control panel-system-device manager tab-click the plus on
ports-click on com port you are using-click properties buttion-device
manager tab-check your port speed is the same as you are connecting at-click
advanced buttion-set FIFO buffers all the way to the left-hit ok). And if
slowing them down does not work then try turning them off by the checkmark
in the same pannel. For some people this have been enough to even get past
some -1 problems. You may even want to try this first.
