A kernel crash, usually caused either by
 - a bug in the kernel or
 - faulty hardware
and usually the later. A common culprit on x86 (Intel) systems for
kernel panics are bad memory chips or fools who overclock their CPUs.

The Windows NT (and up) aequivalent is the infamous "Blue Screen Of
Death".
