512MB seems to be the sweet spot. You mention entry level laptop, thus
that generally means an iBook. The iBooks have a max memory capacity
of 640MB. I would recommend buying one with the standard memory of
256MB and buying a 512MB memory card from Crucial.com to max it out. I
believe they ship standard with 128 & 128 so you'll be pulling out an
existing 128 card and replacing it with a 512.

Its 100% compatible. I've had both regular Airport and Airport Extreme
interactions with non-Apple hardware, both clients and WAP's with no
interoperability problems. Other than the admin page on the base
stations, Apple's wireless implementation has been to use 100% Wi-Fi
compliant standards.

I would mainly just check the stats over at apple.com on the iBooks and
the Powerbooks to get a better idea of which you like better. There
are some advantages to the Powerbook line. One, you can get a PB with
a Superdrive (DVD burner). Two, the max memory is double that of the
iBook line. Three, higher end processors and better L2 cache, which
equals better performance. Third, higher screen resolutions. Fourth,
better video cards. And finally, DVI out. To name a few.

I had a 600Mhz Snow iBook and loved it. In the end I ended up giving
it to my parents and opting for a 15" Titanium Powerbook. If the
laptop will not be your primary computer, but more for traveling and
having mobile internet and mail access, then I would save some dough
and just go with an iBook.
