Dan,
this is not the case. With a short the Newton thinks the accu has a
temperature of 64 deg C an will not charge and with an open circuit it is
like the battery sled or, as I call it, battery tray. If successfully
modified some battery trays and mounted a small two-layer PCB with a
DIP-switch and a thermistor on one side and the two contact pads on the
other side. It is sort of detailed described here:

I´ve also several times at this list offered to modify battery trays and
gave my address to some people but none wanted this modification so far. The
photographs on my website are from the prototype and the modification with
the PCB is carried out with a milling machine and looks more professional
too.
