 From what I know of OS X (haven't read the latest dev docs on this
front) it still uses both.

My current understanding is that it will display based first on type &
creator, and then the extension if there is no type and creator.

I'm sure at some point the type and creator will be thrown away
completely, but that day has not arrived yet.
