Another thought:

I have the brilliant NewtNav for AQ-300 from Adriano, which plugs
beautifully into IC dongle or SER-001 (YES IT'S TRUE -- NO NEED FOR
DONGLE! Full write-up on NewtNav page of the Wiki will follow as soon
as the whole thing will work for me, from data transmission to getting
a positional fix in GPS Map).

Newton serial = Mac serial... And we do have an old Mac around here
into which I could plug the receiver directly! So all I need now is
software with which I can modify a Sirf II-chipset device using MacOS
8.x ... But I don't have anything like this, nor do I know of any.

How can I do this? What is required and where can I get it?

D.

P.S.: Still would like to know what would be needed to tie the GPS to
the PowerBook via USB, as that thing is more likely to accompany me on
trips than a 180 MHz midi-tower beige Mac...
P.P.S.: I've created it's own Wiki page for GPS Map and will collect
all answers there in a FAQ. So if you help me out of this bog, you will
also help the next gal or guy coming along.
P.P.P.S.: Talking of the Wiki and my preference to solve this
completely on the Newton with Init-strings -- what Init stirngs do you
use, and for which receiver? We should collect real-life Init strings
that people really use on the GPS Map-Wiki page... So, let us know!
