How can I check if the Newton is able to send anything at all to the
receiver?
I could make a cable with a PS/2 on a side, and a DB9 to the opposite,
which will let you easily dock your MessagePad to the PC via NewtNav.
(Adriano, when you built the NewtNav, did you also connect the uplink
pins?)
Yes, sure, NewtNav communicate with the Newton via rs-232 protocol.
Didn't work this way for me on my Newton... I see data coming in in
NewTerm, and in TeleType GPS's monitor (unitl that app chokes on too
much communication), but GPS Map -- stable, stoic, non-impressed.
If you succefully estabilished a communication via terminal emulator,
i think it mean that both trasmit and receive channels are enabled from
the MessagePad through the NewtNAV.
I really want to be able to do this completely from the Newton w/o any
external hardware involved. Any additional pointers appreciated.
Did you try the 'backup-erase all-install GPSmap only' way?
This way you will be sure that the problem is not related to your OS
stability.
(Plan B is to hook up to a PC and follow the procedure described here
http://tools.unna.org/wikiwikinewt/index.php/AQ-300 . But for this I
need the C3001 PS/2(M)-to-USB(M) adapter the manufacturer offers, which
will take a while to reach me...)
The NewtNAV has a 9-pin Mac serial plug, which is the male equivalent
of the serial female port present on the interconnect adapter.
9-pin female ports are almost impossible to find onto neither a usb
adapter, nor a mac serial port anymore.
Instead Griffin Technology produces the CubePort internal serial
adapter which is fully compatible with NewtLight, NewtEye and NewtNAV.
Griffin makes a serial adapter for G3/G4 towers too. below a couple of
links for infos:

check the Wiki-pages on GPS which I have compiled from various sources
http://tools.unna.org/wikiwikinewt/index.php/GPSOnNewton, I have quoted
you a couple times -- hope that's okay with you and I have not
misquoted anything.
Cool, thanks!
Also I would be very grateful if you could leave a short write-up of
your receiver on the Wiki, incl. power consumption (I'm trying to
compile a list of equipment and their power consumption at
http://tools.unna.org/wikiwikinewt/index.php/PowerConsumption to make
choosing energy-efficient components easier).
I will do it, thanks again!
Hope you will find a solution for configuring your GPS very soon.
Kind regards,
Adriano
