Doyle, Arthur Conan - Tales of Terror and Mystery (1923)
http://www.stillnewt.org/library/_Fiction/_Fantastic%20Literature/
_Horror/Halloween%202005/

A couple terror/horror tales. Horror of the Heights and Brazilian Cat
are maybe the strongest ones of the terror batch, the first would
nicely fit into Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos universe... The
mystery/crime stories have everything from disappearing couples to mad
men and vanishing steam trains... Most mysterious and terrifying cases!

>I challenge you one and all singlehandedly to:

Still do... C'mon ya sissies! ;=}

>-- find public domain or Creative Commons-licensed horror books or
>stories and newtify them (Matt, Woody, Dan, myself and the rest of the
>usual suspects will be sure to help with any questions not covered here
>http://tools.unna.org/wikiwikinewt/index.php/MakeNewtonEbooksIndex or
>in the manuals) -- if yer too clumsy to find suitable targets, drop me
>a line...

E.g. I got permit from the author for a zombie book, but don't have
time over the next few weeks. Anybody want to tackle this over the
weekend? Drop me a line and I'll send you the link.

Oh, and pls. don't set the font size to anything less than 12 pt. or it
is really a strain on the eyes. Recently I'm even going so far to make
my books 14 pt. bold Geneva with the chapter headings 14 pt. bold New
York, that's really nice in difficult and changing light conditions
(e.g. on train rides).
To speed up the book making, format the whole thing in Word or
something like that, save as Rich Text Format (rtf) and Edit/Add in
Newton Press. It will respect page breaks, bold and italicized markings
and text orientation (left, center, right). That -- together with
Woody's trick described here
http://tools.unna.org/wikiwikinewt/index.php/MakeNewtonEbooks -- really
speeds up the whole process.

>-- create your own scary backdrop images that are CC-licensed or free

>as Halloween-system/alarm sounds etc. (for the events that you can

>horror-themed sound sets (like ghost stuff, monster stuff, haunted
>house/cemetary, best horror screams). If you need any sources of such
>audio stuff cos ye too clumsy fer Google or have misplaced yer clanking

This one would be sooooo shockingly cool... Wake up Newton and have a
coffin-lid creaking... Delete something and have a scream sound off. Do
some other stuff and have an owl hoot, or a (wer)wolf howl, or chains
clatter, or... "Apple HorrorPad", eh?

Doesn't anybody amongst our 2000 listers have a clue on how to build
sound icons? Pls. write a HowTo so folks interested in tackling this
Challenge can meet it. Pretty pretty please. I promise to put your
instructions up on the Wiki, too, if you're shy about that.

>http://www.vinylorphanage.com/talentshow.html - British horror audio!
>http://solcofn.com/Halloween.htm -- Monster Mash(up)!
>http://drmysterian.com/blog.html -- great selection incl. zombie
>calypso! Cold shivers down yer spine, everybody! ;=}

Tell you what, that compilation at Oddio Overplay is really great. Good
for your Halloween Party tomorrow nite!
Same goes for the Monster Mash(up) and Dr. Mysterian's tracks.

That BBC horror audio would be perfect for making blood-freezing
soundfiles. If somebody knew how.

Other, ongoing horrors:

>P.P.S.: Talking about sound... SysPatch 0.5b
>http://download.planetnewton.com/download/Util/Security20.htm by
>Hongkong's
>Richard C.L. Li claims to do something regarding "Global sound
>functions", whatever that means.
>Q: Could somebody pls. investigate?
>Q: What's that Patch improving, anyway?

Still curious about that, as there is nothing about this in the Newton
FAQ. Can't reach Richard through mail (bounces)--anybody able to
enlighten me on this topic? Or tell me how to reach Richard in
Hongkong?

Lastly: Still looking for a copy of Yos' VoiceMonitor 1.0, which he had
released to the Community as freeware. The download page seems to be
here http://www.spacelan.ne.jp/~yos_/newton/newtonprograms.html , but
there is no package to download (404 Not Found). Archive.org doesn't
have the registered version archived, either. All the other Newton
software archives seem to only have the time-limited shareware release.
Anybody got this? Anybody can help to get in touch with Yos in Japan?
I'd like to use Daniel Padilla's VoiceTurn
http://dev.newtontalk.net/~dpadilla/progs.htm (Paging Daniel--your page
doesn't load right now...), which in turn needs VoiceMonitor, so
there...

Thanks.
