Re: [NTLK] Net time

Per the NetTime window:

"Automatically synchronize the Newton's clock to the following RFX
868 compliant network time server every time an ISP link is
established. It uses port 37."

Easy test, try to telnet to port 23 on a time server. If it works
(like "rolex.usg.edu", as Grant pointed out) then that server still
supports RFC 868 (Time Protocol; http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/
rfc868.html), if it doesn't then that server probably only supports
NTP/SNTP (Network Time Protocol/Simple Network Time Protocol; http://
www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1305.html or http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/
rfc2030.html , respectively).

So, although "ntp2.usno.navy.mil" still exists, they've probably
dropped support of the Time Protocol for that of NTP/SNTP. Same goes
for time.apple.com, NTP/SNTP only.

If anyone knows of other time servers that still use the Time
Protocol, please let us know so that we can compile a list of them.
We should probably add this to the Wiki (and maybe someone should
consider writing an NTP/SNTP client for the newton).

Sincerely,

Morgan Aldridge
