[NTLK] Can't connect via Ethernet--followup

To summarize my ethernet connection problems over the last few days
and see if any of this rings a bell, here goes:

Modem card connects perfectly with dialup using Nethopper, Newtscape
and Simplemail.

When I try to use Ethernet card, the process zips through
"connecting" and hangs waiting for pop3.knology.net. After the
connection times out, I get the error message "Problem connecting.
DHCP server unavailable or unable to configure this device."

I called my ISP, they essentially said "we don't offer static IP
addresses, so you'll have to call Apple."

Yeah, right.

I see absolutely no activity on the port light on the router during
all this.

Configuration: DHCP
Card: Megahertz 589E (actually a 3CXE589ET)
Domain name: <none>

Hopefully this email will be easier to follow than the snippets I've
sent about the problem.

Thanks,

Jim
