You are just too young to remember (know) that they really used to be 2" x 4".

For those in the know, if such a thing is come across today - in
remodelling a house from the 50s, say - it will often be referred to
as a "real twobefour".

This whole thing was something foisted on us by the logging/lumber
industry. The old name was kept, the size went down but, If you can
believe it, the price stayed the same (at least for a short while).
BTW, the size didn't immediately drop by half an inch - it went down
in two quarter-inch increments.
