Depending on your skills and interests you could set up your own
server at home, Connect a modem to it and the modem to a phone line,
and you can have your own dial in server for your newton (and other
mobile devices).
Using Linux or any other free Operating System would allow you to set
up mail in a way that the newton can deal with it. The mail system
could just be an smart host, relaying all mail to the "real" mail
server you're using,
No need for SSL in this case, because SLIP/PPP already handles
authentication.
Nice plus: Set up telnet on your server and you can use a variety of
text based browsers (w3m, lynx, links) for your web surfing needs. I'd
recommend using "links" as web browser.
Additionally, there is a program called "Netatalk", offering Appletalk
services on Unix servers. Well, you might not want to use it over an
newton modem powered dial up line.
