Hi:

Great question. I think the only way to know is to use both for about 1 week. The Palm does things better than the iPhone, but the iPhone does things better than the Pre. They are both awesome devices, and they both have their faults. If we don't think 2 dimensionally, maybe we should be asking ourselves: which device is better for me?

iPhone:

-Better battery life (not great, but better than the Pre - background processes hurt the Pre's battery)
-Bigger screen on iPhone
-Touch keyboard on iPhone, with landscape keyboard mode
-Thinner
-Better scratch resistant screen
-Better App store
-Better multi-media ability
-Video

Pre

-Smaller device, more portable
-Multi-tasking OS, the biggest difference
-Brighter screen, higher res (same resolution as iPhone, just smaller screen)
-Better business intelligence (contact and calender management)

The Pre gets criticized for having a screen that scratches easily; poor battery life; small keyboard stuck in portrait mode with no virtual keyboard; cheap, plastic build feel; no video, among others.

I wouldn't trade my iPhone for it. Of course, what everyone wants on the iPhone is a multi-tasking OS, and the Pre takes the cake there. I can really see how limited the iPhone is with no multi-tasking. It get frustrated sometimes banging back and forth from one app to another when all you want is for your RSS feeds to load while you go back and check your Emails. But no go on the iPhone, you are stuck in one app at a time. Apple gave us some nice updates in iPhone 3.0, but they had better move to multi-tasking in OS 4.0, or else with all the competition, they risk losing good customers like me.
