I suspect that there is a piece of software on their Mac (and probably an old
one at that) which generates a serial code when the Newton's Owner Name is
entered. If that's the case then its possible that the family hardly recalls
how to get the program going. Certainly the developer's wife will be elderly
now and she may be reliant on her now grown up children to get in their and
administer the system. However they may only be infrequently about.

Although I've had some email contact with them in the past, Sonny Hung has had
more contact than me, perhaps he could progress things? If he doesn't, then
perhaps I could try to re-establish contact.

If indeed the family officially announced the software is freeware and in
the public domain, it would seem logical that the method of serialization
would also be provided, such that the family would not need to burden
themselves with emailing serial numbers to every single Newton user on the
planet who contacts them.

And if the family is no longer reachable or is otherwise still expecting
"patience" after 9 months, this would appear to be yet another case of
"abandonware."

Sincerely,

James Wages
