[NTLK] NewtonTalk Digest, Vol 33, Issue 13

Let me step in here and reply to John's comment, even as this thread veers closer and closer to being branded with the telltale square brackets ( [OT] ) of an Off-Topic discussion.

Firstly: where is it written than if one is an Apple enthusiast, one must then automatically hate and despise Android...? And, vice versa.

Several years ago I had written and maintained a tech weblog where I ranted on about such things as the disappointing experience that was Windows 8 and the alleged superiority of the iOS platform over Android.

Around this time Apple evangelist Andy Inhatko published an article--in three parts--about why he was switching from iOS to Android. (You can read part one here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2030042/why-i-switched-from-iphone-to-android.html ).

I do not know Mr. Inhatko--I have never met nor communicated with him. But I have been reading his work for many years, and found that I mostly agreed with him. So when he listed the reasons why he was switching, I paid close attention.

Not too much longer after that I saw an opportunity to pick up a highly-rated tablet at a local Fry's Electronics store. This tablet was the Hisense Sero 7 Pro, which came outfitted with Android Jellybean 4.x (I've since rooted it and installed DOPA 4.4).

It was a breath of fresh air! Inhatko was right: Compared to iOS, there are many things it does better, and of course some things--not as well. I really was smitten with it...sadly though, the OS is from 2014, and it runs slower and slower by the day, it seems like, even after rooting it to remove all the Google bloatware. (I wrote about how much I liked it here on NTLK not too long ago.)

I was never a big fan of any of Samsung's offerings, or really anyone else's Android devices...and, as most of what I have is Apple-based (some going back decades), I decided to move on to an iPad Pro 9.7" (so I diverged from Inhatko's beliefs.) I'm very happy with it, but I do lament not using Android on a regular basis. I still use the tablet, but infrequently. It's just too impractical for daily use.

I'm just saying, before judging Android so harshly and being BRAND-blind, perhaps going into a Best Buy or wherever and trying it out might yield a pleasant surprise. I didn't think I would ever operate an Android device, yet alone own one. Still, I have...and I did.

Of course, maybe you have had a bad experience with it. YMMV.

Thanks,
Forrest
